How to Put Together a Crime Report
It is important that you compose a crime report correctly, so that it can be used later during investigations. Crime reports state the facts about a particular offense, without being partial to any of the parties involved. The information in the report will be used in determining the outcome of a specific case to which you, or other parties, may be directly connected. Writing the report in a professional and thorough manner will ensure that you account for all of the details of the crime.

1
Specify which type of crime occurred. If multiple crimes occurred, make sure to list each different one in the report. If writing a report for a home invasion where someone got hurt, you would list both "Breaking and Entering" and "Battery," for example.
-
2
List the time at which the crime occurred exactly, as well as the location. Put the street address and a detailed explanation of what took place from beginning to end.
-
-
3
Add all of the names of the parties involved. Explain each of their roles in the situation, as well as their reason for being at the location at the time of the crime. Include any witnesses at this point in the report as well.
-
4
Access the crime scene and enter a description into the report, including any property damage that you observe. Write down an estimation of the property damage as well, as this may affect the charges that are placed on the suspect parties. Add any information pertaining to how the crime scene was found and reported to the police.
-
5
List any injuries that may have been sustained by the parties involved. Make sure to specify which parties received each injury specifically.
-
6
Arrange the information in the report in an organized manner. Take photographs of the crime scene and injured parties if a camera is available, and include that in the report.
