How to Weed With a Hoe
The modern hoe is designed to cut weeds off at soil level. Properly used, it does not disturb the roots of your garden plants. Using a hoe also saves your back, as you don't have to bend over to ground level in order to get rid of an undesirable plant. Grasp the handle with both hands. If you are right handed, grasp the top of the handle with your right hand, palm facing you. Place your left hand, palm facing away from you, on the handle about 18 to 24 inches below the right hand.

Place the flat edge of the metal end of the hoe flat on the ground behind a weed you wish to eradicate, as viewed from your perspective.

Pull the hoe toward you, keeping the flat metal blade flat on the ground. The blade will decapitate the weeds without disturbing the roots of desirable plants.

Tips & Warnings
Use care when using a hoe around tender, young seedlings or transplants, as their stems are easily cut.
