How to Prepare a Foothold Trap

How to Prepare a Foothold Trap thumbnail
The foothold trap is commonly employed by fur trappers.

The foothold trap is effective for catching a variety of animals because it is easily concealed on the ground. The traps are spring loaded and the primary downside is capturing unintended prey. The trapper must be effective at identifying game trails and setting the trap where it will only be crossed by intended targets. Preparing the trap requires caution as it will spring shut and cause a serious injury if not properly handled. The foothold trap is very sensitive and effective when properly used.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the trap flat on your knee. Locate the two ears pointing upwards on the closed trap and use your hands to push the ears down. This requires a moderate amount of strength and it will open the trap.

    • 2

Check the jaws to ensure they are both flat while holding the ears. Flip the dog (latch) over one of the jaws and hold it in place with your thumb. This requires very little strength and will prevent the trap from springing open.

    • 3

Place your free hand beneath the unsecured jaw and push the pan upwards. The pan will lock into place with the dog and the trap is set. Place the trap flat on the ground in your desired location.

    • 4

Use a rock to pound a stake through the loop on the end of the chain. Cover the chain and the trap with natural materials to conceal the trap's presence. You may dig to allow the trap to sit at the same height as the ground before covering the trap.

    • 5

Bait the area around the trap to attract animals. Use baits specific to the species you wish to attract. Fish, meat or commercial scents are ideal. Also remove any evidence of a human presence from the area.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place a marker close to the trap for location purposes. The marker will prevent you from losing the trap and it is not likely to be noticed by animals if placed well above the trap.

  • Always be cautious of your hands while preparing the trap. Keep your hands under the jaws to prevent the jaws from closing on your hands and causing an injury.
