Instructions

    • 1

Check that the window box has drainage holes at the bottom. If it doesn't, use a drill to create them.

    • 2

Place a 1-inch layer of large gravel or pebbles in the bottom of a deep window box.

    • 3

Pour potting soil on top of the gravel. Stop when it is about 2 inches from the rim of the box or two-thirds of the way full.

    • 4

Press the potting soil down lightly with your hand. Add more if needed.

    • 5

Loosen the roots of your strawberry plants using your fingers and place them in the box. Space the plants approximately four to six inches apart.

    • 6

Add more soil, covering the top of the plant roots and leaving the stems uncovered. Use your fingers to firm the compost around the plant.

    • 7

Water the plants thoroughly after you've finished planting them. If the roots become exposed, add more soil, but do not cover the crown, which can cause them to rot.

    • 8

Place the window box in a window that receives at least eight hours of light a day.

    • 9

Water the strawberries daily to keep them moist.
