How to Chat Up a Guy at a Bar

Body language is the key to communicating at bars.

One of the default places to meet guys is at a bar. It's an easy social environment as people are often there to mingle and flirt. However, the noise in some bars makes it difficult to chat up a guy. You won't be able to get into any deep conversations, but can determine if there is a spark.

Instructions

    • 1

Use body language. It's loud in most bars, which makes conversation difficult. You'll have to rely on body language, especially eye contact. Remember to smile when approaching him. Use the noise as an excuse to get close when you do want to say something to him. Stand close and be ready to get closer.

Ask questions. This is an effective way to get a guy talking. There is limited space for a conversation in a bar, so keep the questions short and sweet. The more creative, the more likely you are to capture his interest. Use the environment to come up with questions, such as the music, the bar and his drink. Anything can start a conversation.

Be interested in him. Don't ask a question then not listen. Be interested in what he has to say (or if it's that boring, choose another guy). Make eye contact and lean in to ask follow-up questions. If things are going well, hint to see him again by saying you'd like to hear more, somewhere quieter, like a quiet corner of the bar or a late-night restaurant.

Use physical contact. Since conversation is limited, send a clear message you're interested. Touching a guy's arm is a universal signal you're interested in him. Use the tight quarters to your advantage by brushing up against him in the crowd or on the dance floor. Don't use these signs unless you're sure you want to see him again, otherwise, you're sending mixed signals.
