Blanching broccoli helps remove dirt.

Broccoli can be eaten raw or cooked and has many health benefits. The vegetable, which is part of the cabbage family, is rich in vitamin C, folate, calcium and fiber. Broccoli also contains plant chemicals known as phytochemicals. According to the American Cancer Society, these phytochemicals lower your risk of certain cancers. Cooking broccoli can destroy its nutritional value. Drinking broccoli juice is therefore an ideal alternative to get all the health benefits from this vegetable.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a deep saucepan with water and bring it to a boil. Fill a deep bowl with cold water.

    • 2

Wash the broccoli and chop it into small florets that will easily fit into the feeder of your juicer.

    • 3

Place the broccoli in the pan of boiling water and blanch it for one minute. Blanching cleanses the organisms and dirt off the broccoli and it also softens the vegetable, making it easier to juice.

    • 4

Pour the broccoli into a strainer and drain boiling water. Plunge the florets into the bowl with cold water. Cold water will shock the broccoli florets and stop the heat from cooking them further.

    • 5

Plug in your juicer and feed the broccoli into it until you have the desired amount of juice. Juice the broccoli stems too as these are just as healthy as the florets.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase only as much broccoli as you will use because broccoli spoils quickly. Look for broccoli that has a purple-like color to it. Avoid yellowish broccoli.

  • Juice carrots or apples with broccoli to add some variety and get extra nutrients.
