Instructions on How to Use Brazing Rods With a Propane Torch

If you need to weld two pieces of metal together but don't have access to a welder, one method is to use brazing rods and a propane torch. The torch heats the metal enough to melt the brazing rods, which you then apply to the two metal surfaces to bond them together. This takes a little bit of practice to do properly, but the bond created by the process makes the joint very solid.

Things You'll Need

• Wire brush
• Gloves
• Brazing rods
• Propane torch
• Metal

Instructions

1. Place the metal you're welding into the position you want them to be when you complete the process. Clean the two metal pieces at the joint, using the wire brush. Put on the gloves.

2. Turn on the propane torch by opening up the bottle and pulling the trigger to activate the flame.

3. Heat the metal, using the flame on the propane torch and focusing the heat on the joint of the two pieces of metal where you need the weld. Touch the tip of a brazing rod onto the metal and let the heat of the metal melt the rod, not the heat from the flame.

4. Work the brazing rod back and forth between the two pieces of metal using a crescent moon pattern, moving the heat down the joint as you work the brazing rod across the two metal pieces at the seam. Stop when you have no more area to braze.

Tips & Warnings

• Don't keep anything flammable around the propane torch while brazing the metals. You could cause a serious fire.
