How to Find Your Girth

How to Find Your Girth thumbnail
In order to account for differences in torso length, it is essential to take girth measurements when sewing leotards.

Strictly speaking, girth is any measurement that completely encircles a part of the body. When a sewing pattern mentions a girth measurement, however, it refers specifically to the length of the torso and includes both the front and the back. This measurement is particularly important for patterns such as bathing suits, leotards and bodysuits. There are two common ways of taking this measurement. In both cases, the process is easier if you can recruit a partner to help you.

Instructions

  1. From the Outside of the Shoulder

    • 1

Place one end of the measuring tape on the tip of your shoulder. Have your partner hold it in place.

    • 2

Run the tape measure down the front of your body and under your crotch.

    • 3

Bring the tape measure out from between your legs and back up to your starting point. Have your partner smooth the tape out where it reaches your lower back. Read the tape measure, in inches or centimeters depending on the pattern you are using.

From the Inside of the Shoulder

    • 4

Position the tape measure on top of the shoulder, near wear it meets the neck. Have your partner hold the tape measure in place.

    • 5

Pass the tape measure down your abdomen and between your legs.

    • 6

Pull the tape measure up your back, while your partner holds the tape measure smooth against the curve in your lower back. Return to the starting place and read the measurement in inches or centimeters.

Tips & Warnings

  • Measuring from the outside of the shoulder will almost always give you a larger measurement than working from the inside of the shoulder. If you are particularly busty, use the outside measurement. The inside measurement works best for children and small-chested women.

  • If you do not have a partner, pin the tape measure to a close-fitting T-shirt.
