How to Mute Someone on Twitter

Twitter is designed as a micro-blogging tool that allows users to type short messages in bursts known as "tweets." Some Twitter user tweet sporadically, while others seem to tweet every minute. Those active users can clog your Twitter timeline and make it more difficult to read tweets from other users. It is possible to silence the super tweeter, both manually and automatically.

Instructions

  1. Mute a Twitter User Manually

    • 1

Navigate to the Twitter profile of the user you wish to mute.

    • 2

Locate the "Unfollow" button directly underneath the user's profile picture. Click it.

    • 3

Make a note of how long you want to unfollow this user. The amount of time is up to you. It could be as little as five minutes up to forever.

    • 4

Re-follow the Twitter user after the desired amount of time has passed by clicking the "Follow" button directly underneath the user's photo on his Twitter page.

    Mute a Twitter User Automatically

    • 5

Navigate your web browser to Muuter, a third-party Twitter application that allows users to mute a certain follower for a set time. The user is then unmuted after that time period is over.

    • 6

Scroll down on the Muuter homepage until you locate the "Sign in With Twitter" button. Click it, and enter your Twitter username and password. Your webpage will then redirect to a Twitter permissions page.

    • 7

Click "Allow" to give Muuter access to your Twitter account. The service is legitimate; your Twitter password won't be compromised. However, you can click the "Deny" button if you do not want Muuter access after all.

    • 8

Follow Muuter's directions to mute the Twitter user or users of your choice. You'll need the user's Twitter name to mute. You can mute a user from one hour up to one week.
