How to Make Rag Rug Ties
If you are putting together a hobo costume for Halloween, for a class play or for a costume party, you can make the hobo costume more whimsical by adding on accessories to make the costume more believable. For example, you can construct a rag rug tie using fleece fabric, which will resemble a disheveled tie a hobo may have worn years ago. You can find all of the materials you need to make a rag rug tie at a craft supply store.
Things You'll Need
- Fleece fabric
- Scissors
- Safety pins
- Straight pins
- Thread
- Needle
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue stick
- Metal hair clips
Instructions

1
Cut three strips of fleece fabric to measure 1 inch wide, 48 inches long. Pin one end of each strip together using a safety pin.
-
2
Braid the three fleece strips together into a tight braid. As you braid, make sure that you do not twist the braid.
-
-
3
Pin the other ends of the strips together with a second safety pin.
-
4
Place the braid onto a flat surface, and wind it into a tie shape. You can make the hobo rag rug tie more whimsical by making it look like a diamond, which will look more exaggerated than a rectangular tie.
-
5
Pin the braided form into place using straight pins. Sew the tie together, sewing in between each of the braids to secure them in place. Remove all of the pins. Turn the ends under, and sew them down underneath the tie.

6
Insert a hot glue stick into a hot glue gun, and plug it in to heat up for 5 minutes.
-
7
Squeeze hot glue onto the tops of two metal hair clips, then press the glued sides of the clips onto the back of the rag rug tie. Position the clips at the top of the tie where it would be placed near the neck. Angle the clips so they are facing away from each other, and hold them in place for 3 minutes until the hot glue hardens. You can now clip the rag rug tie in using the metal clips.
