Make sure to have a designated driver for your next party.

If you love hosting parties, you may worry about serving alcohol. While many of your guests may enjoy downing cocktails, you also want to make sure that everyone gets home safely. As part of your party planning, it is important to have game plan for how to keep friends safe who have had a little too much to drink. You should also offer incentives for some guests to stay sober and act as designated drivers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Offer guests a large variety of non-alcoholic beverages. In addition to typical drinks like water and iced tea, serve virgin piña coladas and strawberry daiquiris. This can help sober guests and designated drivers to feel less left out when the cocktails are flowing.

    • 2

Talk to friends before the party who you know are not big drinkers. See if any of them would be willing to drive home any party goers who may get out of hand.

    • 3

Have snacks out through out the entire course of the party. You never know who may not have eaten all day. Don't give guests the opportunity to start chugging drinks on an empty stomach.

    • 4

Be sure that your party has a point. Don't allow drinking to be the entire focus of the evening. Have board games, trivia, karaoke or other entertainment planned.

    • 5

Make sure to have extra pillows and blankets ready. If any friends get too drunk to drive, invite them to stay overnight so that they can drive home the next day when they are sober.

    • 6

Keep taxi phone numbers handy. You never know when someone who originally intended to stay sober will start to make the wrong choices.

Tips & Warnings

  • Put away all of the liquor and beer at least an hour before your event is scheduled to end. Leave out the soda and snacks. You may even want to start putting out desserts such as brownies and cake once the liquor is gone to give people a new incentive to stick around a little longer.

  • Being designated driver can sometimes be associated with being lame. Help to change that stereotype by offering incentives for sober people. Allow all non-drinkers to enter a raffle, and give away cool prizes.

  • Always take the car keys away from a person who is too drunk to drive. Make sure this person gets home in a cab or with a sober friend. Don't let your intoxicated friend's behavior deter your efforts. Even if she tries to fight you, put your foot down. Once your friend is sober and safe the next day, she will be thankful for what you did.
