Just because Google runs the Android operating system doesn't mean that you have to sync your account to your smartphone or tablet. Whether you're preparing to sell your device or just want to separate your mobile data from your account, you can unsync or even remove your Google account from your Android device. The menu layout is slightly different between the Gingerbread system (2.3) and Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) and Jelly Bean (4.1) systems -- the three versions that account for 93 percent of Android devices.

Android 2.3

Step 1

Open "Settings" menu on your device.

Step 2

Tap "Accounts & Sync."

Step 3

Choose your Google account from the accounts set to sync on your device. If you want to keep the account added to your device but stop all syncing, you can deselect all checkboxes beside synced Google items.

Step 4

Tap "Remove Account" to delete your Google account from the device. You will be prompted to confirm that you want to delete the account and all associated data. Click "Remove Account" confirm this.

Android 4.0 & 4.1

Step 1

Open "Settings" on your device and select "Personal."

Step 2

Choose "Accounts & Sync." Select your Google account. As with Android 2.3, you can deselect a few or all elements of your synced Google account. For instance, you can opt to unsync everything except contacts.

Step 3

Tap the menu icon and select "Remove Account."
