    • Light

Apply for the license in the state that you are planning to shrimp for. Each state has different costs, rules and regulations. Make sure you are aware of what your state requires. The amount of shrimp that you are allowed to catch, the size of shrimp, when you are allowed to shrimp and the size net you use can all vary by the season. If your boat is not licensed, contact your state's tag office to license your vehicle.

Plan when you will go shrimping. Shrimp move to shallow water during the night making them easier to catch. During the day, the shrimp go into deeper water as it is cooler. The deeper they are, the harder they are to catch.

Gather your supplies. Take a lantern or other light source with you if you are boating at night. A light source can attract shrimp as well as light your way. Make sure that your net follows the guidelines for size as determined by the state.

      • 4

Take the boat to the area that you will be fishing. Shallower water during night is optimal.

      • 5

Place bait into the net. Shrimp meal is a specialty bait that can be bought at fishing shops. Rock salt also works well.

      • 6

Cast the net into the water and allow it to fall all the way down. Once it hits the bottom, slowly pull it back up into the boat. The top of the net will close as you pull it up, trapping the shrimp inside.
