How to Use a 2007 Template with Word 2003

Most versions of Microsoft Word include templates, which you can use, for example, to compose a resume or a memo. While Word 2007 uses a format named DOTX for its templates, Word 2003 uses an older version of the format, named DOT. To open a Word 2007 template in Word 2003, you can either use Word 2007 to save the template in DOT format or, if you don't have Word 2007, you can use the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack to convert the template.

Instructions

  1. Using Word 2007

    • 1

Launch Word 2007 and open the template file that you wish to convert to the Word 2003 format.

    • 2

Press the "F12" key on your keyboard to open the "Save As" menu.

    • 3

Select "Microsoft Word 2003" in the file-type drop-down menu and confirm your selection by pressing "OK." The program saves your DOTX file in the DOT format.

Using the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack

    • 4

Download and install both the DOTX to DOCX Converter freeware program and the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack (see "Resources" below).

    • 5

Launch the DOTX to DOCX program and open the template file that you wish to convert.

    • 6

Click "Convert" to save the original DOTX template as a regular DOCX document. You need to perform this step because even though Microsoft designed the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack to convert Word 2007 files to the Word 2003 format, it cannot convert template files.

    • 7

Launch the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack and open your newly created DOCX file. A "Save As" dialog box appears.

    • 8

Select "Microsoft 2003" as the file format in the drop-down menu. The Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack saves your file in the Word 2003 format, allowing you to open and edit it in that program.
