How to Prepare a Best-Man's Speech for a Wedding
Many men who are asked to give a best man speech have never given a public speech before. Although giving a best man speech is similar to other types of public speeches, given the close relationship of the best man to the groom, the best man has the opportunity to make the speech more personal and humorous. Knowing a few basic guidelines can ensure that your best-man speech is a success.

1
Search the Internet for videos of poorly delivered best man speeches. Understanding what not to do can be quite helpful. Examples of best men stuttering, rubbing their face or head, not knowing what to say, not speaking loudly enough, and clamming up can all be seen in online videos of best-man speeches.

2
Write the speech. Write down exactly what you will say and revise the speech as you progress. Keep the speech short. Two or three minutes is a good length for a best man speech.

3
Make the speech personal. Do not just use generalizations and jokes that could be applied to any groom. Talk to mutual buddies to get ideas for humorous or heart-warming stories to tell about the groom. End the speech with one sentimental statement and a toast to the bride and groom.
-
4
Recite the speech out loud over the course of several days. You need to have the speech memorized, even if you plan on using note cards during the speech. Practice giving the speech in front of friends or relatives. Practice speaking loudly and clearly. Do not speak too fast.

Tips & Warnings
Have a typed copy of the speech in front of you when you give the speech; this will save you if your mind suddenly draws a blank.
Do not be drunk; slurred words make for a bad best man speech.
