How to Mix Concrete and Cement for Backyard Flagstones

Mix your own concrete with a simple-to-follow ratio of readily available materials.

If you don't have premixed concrete available, you can put together a batch of concrete of your own with Portland cement, gravel, sand and water. The process is very straightforward and can be completed by just about anyone. With the proper ratio of elements, you can put together a strong concrete mix that can be used for a variety of projects, including the laying down of backyard flagstones.

Things You'll Need

• Wheelbarow
• Sand
• Portland cement
• Gravel
• Water
• Shovel

Instructions

1. Set up a wheelbarrow next to the site where you need to use the concrete, and put in Portland cement, sand and gravel. For every one part Portland cement, use two parts sand and three parts gravel.

2. Stir the cement, sand and gravel with a shovel.

3. Slowly add water to the mixture, pulling the shovel back and forth and, eventually, round and round to mix the materials. Add the water rather slowly, and stop adding water once the concrete has the consistency of pancake batter.
