How to Install an Engine Oil Cooler

Oil coolers are installed in engines to keep the temperature of the oil at a level that allows the lubricant to work at its best. Coolers are normally radiators placed at the front of the main engine cooler. The radiator will be linked to the oil port by tubes that will feed the oil through the cooling process. Kits will come with full instructions and all the required parts, meaning a DIY mechanic can install a new cooler with little experience of engines.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the original equipment port holes for your oil cooler. There will be a line going to the oil pump and one leading from the oil pan.

    • 2

Match up the adapters on the oil line with these holes and bolt them in place.

    • 3

Guide the oil hoses or line tubes to the front of the vehicle and fasten them away from other engine parts, especially those that heat up, if possible. Most kits will include right angle adapters for tricky bends.

    • 4

Fix the oil radiator in place and link to the oil lines.

    • 5

Start the car to get the oil going into the system and then add extra oil so the system is full.
