Update the windows on your brick home with vinyl replacements.

Installing a vinyl window in a brick is a task that can be taken on by most homeowners. Although it may appear somewhat challenging to install a vinyl window on a brick home, the process is not much different from installing a window in a wood house. Vinyl windows come with a nailing flange on the outside edge of the brick molding. The nailing flange has slots along the perimeter to enable you to fasten the window to the wood framing around the window opening for ease of installation.

  • Window and door caulk
  • Caulking gun
  • Vinyl window
  • Level
  • Wood shims

Instructions

    • 1

Trim the tip of the caulking gun to the first mark on the tip, using the cutter in the gun. Insert the tube of window and door caulk in the gun. The tip goes in first, allowing you to pivot the back end of the tube into the gun. Squeeze the handle to push the caulk ahead in the tube to break the seal away. For tubes that do not have a breakaway seal, you will have to puncture the seal by inserting a wire into the tip.

    • 2

Place the window on a work surface with the interior side facing up. Apply a generous bead of caulk around the interior perimeter of the nailing flange.

    • 3

Stand the window upright. Lift the window, holding the interior side facing out. Insert the window into the opening. Place the sill of the window on the base of the window opening and tilt the window in place from the exterior of the house.

    • 4

Lay a level across the sill of the window from the interior of the home. Slide wood shims under the sill between the sill and the window frame to adjust the window for level as needed.

    • 5

Hammer galvanized nails through the holes in the nailing flange into the exterior side of the window frame to secure the window in place.

    • 6

Spray aerosol urethane foam insulation into the space around the window frame on the interior side of the window.
