How to Paint Names on a Boat

How to Paint Names on a Boat thumbnail
Add a name to the side of your boat.

Boat names vary from silly to serious and may signify an ideal, a lover or a close friend. Popular boat names include Serenity, Odyssey and Osprey. If you wish to change the name of your boat or add a new name to a boat without a name, you can paint the name onto the boat. If you do not wish to paint, you can use adhesive vinyl stickers to create the name instead.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove old adhesive letters, if necessary. Heat the old letters using a hair dryer and peel them away with a razor blade.

    • 2

Clean the boat with a warm, soapy towel. Wipe it dry with a clean towel. Strip the wax using an oven cleaner.

    • 3

Dip a paint roller in fiberglass primer and roll it over the area to which you will apply the letters of the boat name. Allow the primer to dry for several hours and sand the boat with a medium-grit sandpaper. Add a second coat of primer and allow it to dry completely.

    • 4

Tape stencils to the boat using masking tape. Place the stencil against the paint and place masking tape on the top and bottom of the stencil. Repeat this process for all of the letters.

    • 5

Dip a paintbrush in fiberglass paint. Apply the paint to the boat, painting within the lines of the stencil. Move on the the next stencil and apply paint to the boat. Repeat this process for all of the letters.

    • 6

Allow the paint to dry for three to four hours and apply a second coat of paint. Allow the second coat to dry for three to four hours.

    • 7

Spray the lettering with a waterproofing spray. Hold the spray about 8 inches from the boat and pull the nozzle. Apply spray to the entire surface of the lettering.
