How to Install a Tailgate Seal

How to Install a Tailgate Seal thumbnail
Installing a tailgate seal is easy, and it provides protection between the tailgate and pickup truck bed.

A tailgate seal is used in pickup trucks. It provides for a tight, waterproof seal between the tailgate and the truck bed, preventing moisture and dirt from entering the bed. It is often used when the truck bed is to be covered. High quality tailgate seal kits, also known as tailgate gasket sets, are made from rubber or acrylic foam, and they are affixed very simply, using the adhesive surface that is bonded to the material.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the edges of both the tailgate and the bed frame. Use a cloth saturated with alcohol. Some kits may include alcohol wipes -- these can be used as well.

    • 2

Measure the truck bed frame to determine how much seal material is needed. This is best done by measuring the vertical section of the frame, doubling the result, and then measuring the horizontal section.

    • 3

Cut the required amount of seal material from the roll provided in the kit. Add an inch or two to be certain, as you will be able to trim the excess part.

    • 4

Remove the protective strip from the adhesive backing of the tailgate seal. Affix the tailgate seal to the rear frame of the truck bed; use enough pressure to ensure a tight fit. Trim any excess part and close the tailgate.
