Rummage sales are ideal ways for organizations to raise money.

Organizations plan rummage sales to raise money to give to charities or for a specific cause. Rummage sales are an ideal way for organizations to raise cash through generous donations from the community or people from the organization. When planning a rummage sale, a committee is generally set up. The members of this committee plan the details of the sale including the place to hold it, the date and the drop-off plans.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a committee. A committee is needed for proper planning of a rummage sale. To plan effectively, the committee begins meeting several months prior to the sale and then meets periodically to make plans, discuss them and delegate duties.

    • 2

Choose a date. The first main decision made when planning a rummage sale is deciding when it will be. The committee may choose one or two alternate dates in case the location of the sale is not available for the chosen date.

    • 3

Reserve the place of the sale. The second main decision to make is deciding where to hold it and reserving the space. Many organizations such as schools and churches host rummage sales. These organizations generally hold the sale in their own buildings. They must contact someone from the organization though to determine the availability of the place on the chosen date.

    • 4

Plan the dates and times for drop offs. When planning a rummage sale, list the days people are invited to drop off goods as well. Offer several dates to ensure that everyone who wants to participate has an opportunity.

    • 5

Determine how to separate and price items. Many committees will separate items by category and place one person in charge of each category. This works well when items begin arriving. Several workers begin sorting and placing items in the appropriate categories. Each person then works in her own category organizing and pricing the items. The items should be stored in boxes, separated by categories, until the day of the sale. During this time the committee should also set up a floor plan allowing enough space for each category.

    • 6

Publicize the event. Begin publicizing the event several weeks in advance, allowing enough time for the community to hear about it. It can be publicized in many ways including posting it on a marquee, placing it in community newsletters and posting signs around the area.

    • 7

Set up the sale. Ideally, everything should be set up and organized one day prior to the sale. This works best because rummage sales have a lot of items for sale, making it impossible to set up systematically the morning of the sale.
