How to Do Music Ministry

How to Do Music Ministry thumbnail
Music ministries add enjoyment to church services.

Music ministries are associated with Christian churches as a means of including compositions and songs into weekly worship services. Music ministries include singers and musicians and are often led by a music director. Creating a music ministry is a wonderful way to bring creative and performing talents together within your church body to fashion a melodic group, adding to the joyous celebration of standard, holiday and special event church ceremonies.

Instructions

    • 1

Establish a mission and philosophy of the music ministry. Write down mission statements, objectives, age limits and guidelines to act as a handbook for highlighting the purpose and focus of the group. Include a belief in the Christian faith, a commitment to serving God and the church and a vow to rehearse at least once a week as requirements for music ministry membership. Detailing requirements of the ministry beforehand helps to build a group sharing the same vision and values.

    • 2

Interview potential members of the music ministry. Ask questions regarding vocal range and/or expertise in musical instruments. Audition potential members to get a feel of their strengths and weaknesses. Remember that a potential member's passion for the ministry itself should be included in the evaluation of their talent.

    • 3

Select songs that fit the theme of the church, weekly sermons and/or holiday seasons. Use traditional church resources to access ministry music or visit online sites to search for songs. Log on to the Small Church Music website, for example, and scroll through listings of well-known hymns, sermon starters, Easter and Christmas music or a database of traditional church songs.

    • 4

Rehearse with the ministry at least once per week and just before the beginning of each Sunday morning service. Dress members in identical performance robes if services are formal or confirm a dress code beforehand if services are less formal. Encourage members to express their passion for the music and ministry as they perform.
