How to Adjust Nose Pads on Metal Eyeglass Frames

How to Adjust Nose Pads on Metal Eyeglass Frames thumbnail
Most nose pads are adjustable on metal frames.

Glasses that constantly slide down your nose are not only aggravating but it is often difficult to see. Nose pads that are too tight and pinch are just as frustrating. You can adjust the nosepads on your glasses using one of two methods, but you must use caution and work gently so you do not break the pads off. Nose pads are usually welded on to a metal frame and are meant to be adjusted, but only with careful, small movements.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Moving the Pad Method

    • 1

Wrap duct tape around the ends of your pliers, several rotations so the ends of the pliers are completely covered. This prevents the pliers from sliding off the nose pad and also helps avoid scratching lenses. Place a small towel around the lens to protect from damage.

    • 2

Hold your glasses so the frame is facing you. Start with the right nose pad. Place the pliers over the pad and grip the pad. Gently push the pad out to widen the bridge or move it in to narrow the fit.

    • 3

Repeat with the left pad. Try the frame on and look at the nose pad in a mirror. You may need to make several adjustments on each side until the fit is comfortable.

Adjusting the Nose Pad Arm Method

    • 4

Cover the lens with a towel and hold the frame so it is facing you. It helps to hold the frame upside down and facing you when using this method. Do not use tape on the pliers for this method.

    • 5

Grip the arm, the thin, curved piece of metal that holds the nose pad, with the tip of the pliers.

    • 6

Move the arm slightly to adjust the nose pad to the fit you want. Work in little movements and very gently. Check the fit in the mirror as you make adjustments. Repeat with the left side.

Tips & Warnings

  • Moving the arm of the nose pad with pliers can mar the metal of the arm. Most marks are usually not visible but use light pressure to avoid damaging the metal.

  • Adjusting your own nose pads may void the warranty of your frame. If you are unsure, check with your eye care practitioner.
