Milk Jug Easter Basket Directions
Making an Easter basket with a milk jug is an ideal project for children preschool age on up to fourth grade. The older the children are, the more detailed the baskets can be. It is a creative way to prepare for Easter with your child, and saves the expense of buying an Easter basket. The project utilizes common items that you likely have around the house and is a clear way to teach your children about reusing. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Draw the outline of the pieces you want to cut out of the milk jug using a dark permanent marker. Draw a line going completely around the jug horizontally. Draw two parallel lines going from the horizontal line on one side of the milk jug, over the top of the milk jug to the horizontal line on the other side. The two horizontal lines will create the handle, so drawn them far enough apart that the plastic left is wide enough to be used as a handle.
-
2
Cut a plastic milk jug along the lines you drew. The two pieces of plastic cut out of the top half of the milk jug can be discarded.

3
Paint the sides of the milk jug with diluted white craft glue using a craft brush. To dilute the white craft glue, pour some glue into a disposable plastic bowl, then stir the glue as you add small amounts of water. Continue stirring and adding water until the glue easily stirs and is not separated from the water.
-
4
Add cotton balls to the outside of the jug by pressing the cotton balls into the glue. Keep the cotton balls close together, so the plastic jug is not visible between the cotton balls. Give the glue plenty of time to dry -- at least an hour -- before continuing the project.
-
5
Cut two ears out of white construction paper. Cut two eyes out of black or blue construction paper, and a nose out of pink construction paper.
-
6
Glue the cut-out pieces of construction paper on one side of the milk jug to create a bunny face. Glue the bunny face right on top of the cotton balls.
-
7
Put a large dab of hot glue on the inside of one end of the handle.
-
8
Push the end of a piece of ribbon into the hot glue, and wait for the hot glue to dry completely.
-
9
Start wrapping the ribbon around the handle. Overlap the ribbon slightly as you wrap it around the handle. Keep wrapping the ribbon around the handle until the ribbon reaches the other end of the handle.
-
10
Secure the ribbon at the other end of the handle with a large dab of hot glue on the under side of the handle.

Tips & Warnings
Let your child be creative when making the bunny's face. They can use different colors of construction paper than suggested, or make a funny face for the bunny.
The project will effectively keep a child busy for approximately an hour.
Although this is a project designed for young kids, hot glue guns are potentially dangerous, so direct supervision is required.
