Under-eye swelling occurs as a result of fluid retention under the eyes, leading to irritation, discomfort and embarrassment. Whether caused by allergies, illness or too much alcohol the night before, puffy eyes are uncomfortable and unattractive. Lay down with your head propped up with an extra pillow to keep it elevated above your heart. Place a cold cucumber slice on each closed eye. Leave the cucumber slices in place for 10 minutes to reduce puffiness in the under-eye area and eyelid.

Remove the cucumber slices and discard. Take the cold washcloth out of the refrigerator and blot around the eye to remove cucumber juice and treat remaining puffiness. Hold the washcloth against the skin for a couple minutes in areas where under-eye swelling has not improved.

Tips & Warnings

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid becoming dehydrated, which leads to puffy eyes.

  • Limit your salt intake so your body doesn't hold onto excess fluids.

  • Get enough sleep and prop your head up with an extra pillow to prevent fluid from pooling around your eyes.

  • Cold, damp tea bags reduce puffiness and can be used in place of cold cucumber slices.

  • When under-eye swelling doesn't respond to these treatments see your doctor to rule out underlying medical conditions for which it might be a symptom.
