How to Hang Plastic Shutters

Plastic or vinyl shutters are an effective way to adorn the windows on the exterior of your home. You can achieve a traditional appearance on your home without the cost or maintenance of using wood shutters. Plastic shutters are installed tight against the window trim on either side of the window. Traditional operating shutters are installed on the edges of the casing so they can close correctly. Plastic or vinyl shutters are fastened to the siding with painted screws that match the color of the shutter.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the plastic shutters one at a time against the house on either side of the window. The inside edge of the shutters should be flush against the side window trim. Center the shutters within the overall height of the window opening. Use a tape measure to achieve an accurate position for each shutter by measuring down from the top of the window casing on each side.

    • 2

Mark the installation holes in the shutters on the siding, using a scratch awl. Slide the awl through the hole and press the point into the siding to mark the location of the holes. Remove the shutters from the side of the house and set them aside.

    • 3

Drill an 1/8-inch-diameter hole 1-3/4 inches deep into the exterior of the home at each marked location, using an 1/8-inch drill bit.

    • 4

Align the shutter mounting holes with the holes in the exterior of the home on either side of the window. Drive the included mounting screws through the holes in the shutters and into the siding with a screw gun.

Tips & Warnings

  • Select a shutter color that will accent your siding and complement the window trim.
