How to Change the Security Settings in Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox contains a variety of security settings that affect which websites can install add-ons on your computer, what types of dangerous websites are blocked and how Firefox's password manager behaves. These settings can be configured in the security pane of Firefox's options menu. Depending on your preferences, you can restrict websites from trying to install add-ons or lock down the password manager with a strong master password.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the orange "Firefox" menu button at the upper-left corner of the Firefox window and click "Options."

    • 2

Click the "Security" icon at the top of the Options window.

    • 3

Toggle the "Warn me when sites try to install add-ons" checkbox to enable or disable the information bar that appears at the top of a Web page when it tries to install add-ons. The installation attempt will fail silently if warnings are disabled unless the website is on your exceptions list.

    • 4

Click the "Exceptions" button to manage the list of websites that are allowed to install add-ons. Add a website by typing its name in the box in the Exceptions window and clicking "Allow" or remove a site by clicking its name in the list of exceptions and clicking "Remove Site."

    • 5

Toggle whether to block websites that can harm your computer by clicking the "Block reported attack sites" checkbox. If this option is enabled, a warning page will appear when you navigate to a reported attack site. This feature won't block every dangerous website, just websites that have been reported as dangerous.

    • 6

Toggle whether to block forgery websites, also known as phishing websites, by clicking the "Block reported Web forgeries" box. These sites pretend to be legitimate websites to steal your personal information. This feature only blocks forgeries that have been reported.

    • 7

Toggle whether you want Firefox to remember passwords for websites by clicking the "Remember passwords for sites" checkbox.

    • 8

Manage the list of websites that Firefox should never asks to save passwords for by clicking the "Exceptions" button in the passwords section. Remove an exception by clicking its name in the list; click "Remove." Add an exception by clicking "Never this site" when Firefox asks whether to remember a password for a website.

    • 9

Select whether to use a master password by clicking the "Use a master password" checkbox. A master password protects your saved passwords with encryption. Only people who know the master password can access your saved passwords; you'll have to type your master password to use the saved passwords feature. When you enable this feature, Firefox will ask you to set a master password. If you want to change the master password later, click the "Change master password" button.

    • 10

Manage your saved passwords by clicking the "Saved passwords" button. Remove a saved password by clicking it in the list and clicking "Remove." View the saved passwords by clicking the "Show passwords" button.

    • 11

Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the Options window.
