How to Make Bread With Almond Milk

How to Make Bread With Almond Milk thumbnail
Almonds contain vitamins A and D, as well as magnesium.

For people following vegan or lactose-free diets, making bread at home with almond milk is an easy way to maintain your dietary lifestyle. Baking with almond milk instead of cow's milk can also reduce the calorie and fat content of your bread while adding minerals and vitamins. Many store-bought brands of almond milk are highly processed, so the almonds lose much of their nutritional punch; make your own milk for the most healthful product. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Select a bread recipe. Almond milk can replace cow's milk using the same measurements in any bread recipe, whether a dessert or savory bread.

    • 2

Determine how much almond milk you will need for your recipe. This recipe will yield four cups of almond milk. If you only need two cups, cut the measurements in half, or add to the measurements if you need more milk.

    • 3

Place 1 cup of almonds in a pot with 1 qt. of distilled water. Cover and refrigerate. Let soak for 8 hours.

    • 4

Pour water and almonds into a strainer, then place drained almonds into your blender or food processor with 1 qt. of water. Blend thoroughly on the highest speed for three minutes.

    • 5

Place a coffee filter into your strainer and place the strainer over a large bowl. Pour the almond-water mixture into the strainer slowly, making sure the mixture goes through the coffee filter. A coffee filter will weed out even the smallest chunks of almond. Pour strained almond milk into a glass container that seals and place in the refrigerator.

    • 6

Bake your bread according to the recipe's specific instructions, substituting the almond milk for the cow's milk.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want a nondairy or vegan bread, make sure that you substitute other ingredients as well. If there are eggs in the recipe, substitute half a banana for each egg required. Use dairy-free margarine in place of butter.

  • To sweeten the almond milk add 1 tsp. of honey or vanilla, which will add a little extra flavor to dessert breads. You could also add 1 tsp. of pure cocoa for chocolate-based breads.

  • Use the chunks of almonds you strained out of the milk in your bread mixture: they will create a thicker texture and add a nutty almond flavor. This works well when added to basic wheat or white bread recipes.
