Removing and preventing milia leads to beautiful, smooth skin.

Milia are one of the many bumps that appear on the skin as a result of skin cells and oil trapped in the pores, beneath the skin's surface. Milia differs from the blackhead, whitehead, and pimple in that they are actually tiny cysts that result from trapped skin cells that aren't removed during the skin's natural exfoliation process. Milia are unsightly bumps, yet they are fairly simple to remove. Not only can you make them go away, but you can prevent them from reappearing. Does this Spark an idea?

Visit a dermatologist. The safest way to remove milia bumps, is to have it done in a doctor's office by a dermatologist who knows what he's doing. That will ensure that no scarring occurs, and that the milia is removed the safest way possible.

Extract at home. If you can't afford a trip to the dermatologist, there is a way to make milia go away at home. Steam your face to open your pores, either by taking a hot shower or holding your face over a pot of boiling water. Use a lancet to carefully pierce the bump, and then slide a comedone extractor over the area to remove the buildup. Finish by applying a toning serum to the affected area.

    • 3

Exfoliate your skin. Milia results from the skin's inability to properly exfoliate dead skin cells, so you can help remove existing milia while preventing future bumps from appearing, by treating your skin with an exfoliating cleanser at least three times a week.

Learn what to avoid. To prevent future milia from forming, avoid excessive sun exposure, which causes the skin to age and become less effective at naturally exfoliating. Avoid heavy skin creams, and excessive cosmetics, as both of these tend to clog the skin cells and encourage the development of milia.
