I Can't Change Default Margins on My Word Document

The Microsoft Word application includes options for changing your document's margin and gutter sizes as well as headers and footer sizes. These values are specific to the document you are working in. However, Word also allows users to set the current document's settings as the default for all future documents. Despite the new ribbon-based user interface of Word 2007 and 2010, the process is similar for all versions of Word.

Tips & Warnings

  • Microsoft Word also allows you to change the default font settings, including font, size, style and effects. Open the "Format" menu and select "Font" in Word 2003. For 2007 or 2010, open the "Home" ribbon and click the small arrow icon in the bottom-right corner of the "Font" section.
