Use a jigsaw to make a "Kingdom Hearts" keyblade.

In the "Kingdom Hearts" video game series, Sora, and several other characters, wield a keyblade for a weapon. The keyblade has a unique shape in that it is a "sword" and a "key" in one. Making a keyblade out of wood for costume play, or just for fun, takes a bit of effort. The simplest keyblade to make is the Metal Chocobo. Its simple square design can be cut out of wood with a jigsaw.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a photo of the Metal Chocobo keyblade to make a pattern. Print the photo and use it for the pattern if you are making a small keyblade. A full-size keyblade will require several pieces of paper. The keyblade will have to be drawn using pencil and ruler. Tape the pieces of paper together to form the entire design. Use as little tape as possible. Separate the pages when the design is drawn.

    • 2

Place carbon paper on the wood, dark side down. Tape the carbon paper to the side of the wood to hold it in place. A large keyblade design will be done page by page. Place the carbon paper on one corner of the wood. Find the piece of the design that would go in that corner of the wood. It is like putting together a puzzle.

    • 3

Place the pattern over the carbon paper. Trace the pattern with a pencil. Press firmly but not too hard that you dent the wood. Remove the pattern and carbon paper from the wood when finished. Touch up any of the design on the wood with the pencil. Repeat for the rest of the pattern pages until the entire design is on the wood.

    • 4

Cut out the design with the jigsaw. Cut slowly. Cut out the middle of the keyblade handle. Drill the holes in the keyblade. Cut out the rest of the design.

    • 5

Sand the edges with the sandpaper. Pay extra attention to the handle of the keyblade.

    • 6

Drill a hole in the end of the handle. Glue one end of the chain in the hole using epoxy. Let it cure the required amount of time.

    • 7

Attach the chocobo to the end of the chain.

    • 8

Paint the keyblade. Use the photo as a guide. The blade is gray and the handle is maroon.

Tips & Warnings

  • More complicated keyblades can be made with the jigsaw. Use a lathe to make the round handles and blades. Metal can be attached for decorative pieces.

  • Chocobo keychains can be found online or in novelty stores.

  • A jigsaw is a dangerous tool. Do not make this keyblade if you have not used a jigsaw before. Ask someone who has, to make the keyblade for you.
