How to Steer a Boat

How to Steer a Boat thumbnail
Different kind of boats steer differently.

Learning to steer a boat is a skill just like any other. Different boats need to be steered using different methods. For some boats, you steer in the direction you want to turn. For other boats, you steer in the opposite direction you want to turn. The method you use depends on the kind of boat you have and how it is equipped.

Instructions

    • 1

Steer by turning the wheel in the direction you want to turn. This only works if your boat is equipped with a steering wheel. Use this technique for both sailboats and motorboats.

    • 2

Move the tiller in the opposite direction you want to steer if you are using an outboard motor and your boat has no steering wheel. Use this technique for sailboats and motorboats.

    • 3

Move the tiller in the opposite direction you want to turn if your boat has a rudder. Use this technique for sailboats only. You can steer a sailboat this way whether you are under sail or using your motor (if you have one).

Draw the oar more forcefully on the side opposite to the direction you want to turn if you are rowing. Use this techniques for oar-powered boats.
