Instructions

  1. Prep Work

    • 1

Wash and dry jeans first. Washing makes denim softer which, in turn, makes it easier to work with. Once denim is washed and dried you're ready to start the distressing process.

    • 2

Mark where you want to create holes/frays with a pencil. Once you've marked the sections you want to distress, try the jeans on to make sure that the areas you've picked still look ideal. Next, place a piece of cardboard under the marked areas so you'll have a flat surface to work on.

    • 3

Rub over the area you want to distress with a cheese grater and/or cut jeans with a pair of scissors. If you want a slightly distressed look don't rub too hard. For a more noticeable fray, rub more vigorously. Continue until you've achieved your desired level of distress.

    • 4

Create an additional worn appearance with sandpaper. Sandpaper is great for creating frays on pockets and hemlines. Simply rub sandpaper over the chosen area until you've achieved your desired level of distress.

    • 5

Wash and dry jeans once finished distressing. This will intensify frays/holes, giving your jeans a more authentic distressed look. If you don't want to wash your jeans again, you can also take a damp sponge and vigorously rub it on distressed areas to create a similar look.
