How to Apply Hide Glue Crackle

How to Apply Hide Glue Crackle thumbnail
Sanding furniture before applying crackle provides a better surface for this technique.

Crackle painting is a shabby-chic way to decorate your furniture with an antique style for less. This do-it-yourself painting technique is a moderately easy way to give furniture the worn-out, aged and distressed look of a cracked finish. Choose from various contrasting colors to refinish furniture, cabinets and more. Decorate your home with a special touch using crackle paint to create a memorable keepsake piece of furniture to display for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint a base coat onto a sanded, bare piece of furniture. The base coat should be darker than the top coat. For instance, paint a dark-brown base coat that will show through a top coat of creme or eggshell. The base coat will be the color of the cracks. Let dry.

    • 2

Apply a coat of the crackle hide glue to the entire surface of the painted furniture with a paintbrush; paint with smooth strokes in a single direction for a directional crackle. Let dry at least 24 hours. The thicker the application, the deeper the cracks. For thin cracks, apply a thin application. Let rest for 15 minutes, or until sticky.

    • 3

Paint, quickly, the entire piece of furniture with the top coat of paint; this is the color that will crackle. Paint in smooth one-direction strokes or use a rolling brush for a more uniform look. Let dry 24 hours before handling.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the crackle sags, gently but immediately wipe the top coat off with a cheesecloth and a dab of paint stripper. Then repaint the area to make uniform.

  • Always paint in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes, which can cause dizziness.
