How to Use a Mechanical Screwdriver

One way to prevent blisters on your hands from turning multiple screws is to use a ratchet or mechanical screwdriver. These types of screwdrivers lock a bit into a coupler and use the coupler to turn the bit. The mechanical screwdriver was the precursor to the ratcheting type screwdrivers today. Mechanical screwdrivers use a push/pull method rather than a twisting motion to drive screws. Using a mechanical screwdriver takes a little bit of practice. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the bit chuck toward the handle and insert the appropriate driver bit. Release the bit chuck to secure the bit. The bit chuck operates similar to a drill chuck, without the need to tighten the chuck.

    • 2

Slide the directional switch toward the bit for installing screws. The directional switch is usually on the barrel above the bit chuck.

    • 3

Hold the head of a screw against the screwdriver bit. Position the screw over the work area, holding the bit chuck in one hand and holding the handle with your other hand. The screwdriver should be straight as you hold it against the work area.

    • 4

Push the handle down toward the work area with gentle force. The spiral action of the mechanical screwdriver turns the screw. Once the screw is started, gently lift up on the handle while still holding the bit onto the screw head.

    • 5

Push down on the handle until it will not move further and gently release the handle to allow it to fully extend. Continue the pushing and releasing of the handle until the screw is completely in place.

    • 6

Remove a screw. Set the directional switch toward the handle for removing screws. Use the push and release sequence just as you would to install a screw.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some mechanical screwdrivers have a ratchet adjustment. This is usually the midway point between forward and reverse. Push the handle all the way down and slide the directional switch to the middle. The screwdriver will turn as you turn the handle.
