Customize your necklace with your name carved on a pendant.

If you want something carved on a metal necklace, you usually have to send it away to a professional but there is a way you can do this at home. You can use polymer clay which is easy to work with and only requires a conventional oven to cure it. It comes in many colors so you should be able to find one that will match with the necklace that you want to personalize. Polymer clay can be purchased from a craft store.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of polymer clay that is about one inch wide. Work it in your hands to soften it and roll it into a short pillar. Cut off another piece that is a contrasting color to the first one and soften it in your hands. Roll it into a pillar and roll it flat with a rolling pin until it is about 1/8 inch thick and twice the width as the pillar.

    • 2

Place the pillar in the middle of the flat piece and carefully roll it so that the flat piece covers the pillar. Go slowly and press gently to make sure there are no air pockets. Press the edges closed and smooth them with the tips of your fingers. Gently press the roll down so this it is a little flatter. Poke a 1/8 inch hole through the clay near the edge so you can hang it from a necklace.

    • 3

Place the clay on a cookie sheet and bake it in a conventional oven at the time and temperature specified on the package for your brand of Polymer clay. When the time is up, remove it from the oven with an oven mitt and let it cool for at least one hour.

    • 4

Write your name on the surface of the hardened clay very lightly with a pencil. Carve slowly and carefully along the letters with a bamboo skewer or the tip of a sharp knife. The contrasting color underneath the first layer of clay is now visible as the carved letters.
