Set up a comfortable playing and listening space for your musician.

Remodeling a teenage girl's room is significantly different from decorating a little girl's room. A teen has developed her own sense of style and typically wants to express that in her clothing and room decor, so it's best to let her determine to a large extent what her room looks like. But make this a collaborative project, so that you can teach her some basic design and planning skills. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Plan your room and set a budget. Draw out a room plan with your daughter showing how all the furniture will be arranged. Chances are, you'll want a sleeping area, a dressing area, study and workspace and a reading and lounging area. Adjust the size of each space based on how big the bedroom is.

Figure out how much money you can spend, as your budget will drive many of your choices. For example, you may have enough money to buy a brand-new bedroom set, or you may have to paint what you have.

Decide on a color scheme, based on your teen's preferences.

    • 2

Paint the bedroom your chosen colors. Let it dry. Meanwhile, refurbish any furniture that you're keeping. Give it a fresh coat of paint, and accent it any way you want. Consider stenciling or adding decals. Think bold and dramatic instead of pristine and innocent. Most teen girls have outgrown princess-style design and want to mix feminine flair with darker, heavier colors and texture.

    • 3

Set up the study area. Place a desk near a window, and provide adequate work light. Cubbies, drawers and bookcases are all necessary for a neat and organized study area. Mount a bulletin board for reminders, calendars, photos or keepsakes. Purchase a comfortable desk chair with proper back support. To save space, look for a flip-down table or a chair that tucks neatly under the desk.

    • 4

Create a focal point with richly patterned curtains, a dramatic headboard or a bedspread. Use patterns and colors that complement one another. Add wall art and throw pillows.

    • 5

Create a space for her passion. Hang posters of favorite musical artists, and create a comfortable area for her to listen to music. Make her interests and hobbies part of the overall decor.

    • 6

Organize the closet and place stackable drawers, cubbies or cabinets in a dressing area. Separate clothes by type and color. Place a chair and vanity table nearby so that she can put on her makeup there instead of using the bathroom when her siblings need to get in.

    • 7

Place a love seat or armchair in the room if there's enough room. Throw in some floor pillows, a rug and a side table with a lamp for reading. Place a bookcase or DVD rack nearby. If your space is limited, let the bed serve as a lounge area by putting it against a wall and placing pillows and cushions on one side, like a daybed.
