How to String Beads That Are Already on a String

A 'hank' of beads is the term for a large amount of the same color and size beads that are already on a string. Bulk retailers frequently sell seed beads on hanks that include thousands of beads already on a series of strings, often 12 strands that are looped together to make the hank. Jewelry and knitting artists transfer beads from hanks to knitting or beading strings by rows, without first emptying the hank strands.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the hank of beads securely beneath the knotted end. Carefully untie the hank using a jeweler's awl or some other sharp pointy tool.

    • 2

Cover the ends of the gathered strands of beads securely with clear tape. The goal is to work with only one strand of the hank at a time. T aping the knot together allows you to isolate a single strand easier.

    • 3

Cut a length of beading thread. If you are transferring the beads to knitting thread, unroll a section of thread from the spool.

    • 4

Pull out the end of one strand of beads from between the tape. Tie a half-knot in the end of the strand. Do not pull the knot tight, leave the circle open.

    • 5

Insert the beading thread or knitting string at least 2 inches through the circle. Tighten the half knot around the string.

    • 6

Slide the beads that are already on the hank string over the knot and onto the beading thread or knitting string. Transfer as many beads as you need for the project.

    • 7

Remove the hank string from the beading thread or knitting string. Tie a loose knot or tape the end of the beading or knitting thread to keep the beads on the string. Tie a knot in the hank string if beads are still on the string. Insert the hank string between the tape strips at the end of the hank.

Tips & Warnings

  • Jewelry artists who only need a few beads at a time from the hank can remove the beads using a beading needle. Rather than knot beading thread to the hank string, isolate one hank string and carefully transfer the beads over a beading needle and onto beading thread.
