Kilt Instructions

Kilt Instructions thumbnail
Kilts were popularized in Scotland.

A kilt takes quite a while to put on if you are assembling it on yourself from a single piece of fabric. Unlike most clothes, kilts don't require any stitching, though many sold today are sewn together to save time in dressing. Putting on a kilt from a single piece of fabric requires folding the large piece of fabric over itself many times, then lying on the garment, folding it over yourself and tying down the top. The wearer can add a broach around the loose ends for further security. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out your fabric. The fabric should be 12-feet wide by 12 to 15 feet long.

    • 2

Fold it in half widthwise and ensure all sides are straight.

    • 3

Measure the area from the bottom of your knee to your waste. Mark the same distance on the bottom of the width-side of your fabric. Remember the location. The closed end will be the bottom of the kilt.

    • 4

Push the belt in two feet under the fabric where you made your mark.

    • 5

Measure the length from each side of your hip and make the same measurement lengthwise on the kilt. Add an additional two stripes --- each piece of kilt fabric is lined with crisscrossing stripes that form checkers.

    • 6

Pull each side of the fabric up with both arms from the location you marked in Step 5. Fold it over two stripes.

    • 7

Repeat Step 6 by pulling up and folding back two additional lines. Ensure it ends about 1 inch from the last fold. Continue fleeting until approximately 2 feet of fabric is left. Try to keep the lines as straight as possible.

    • 8

Lie down on your back on the fleeted area so that the back of your knees are at the edge of the folded bottom of the fabric.

    • 9

Grab the middle section of the non-fleeted fabric and pull it over your waste. Pull the other side over you. Ensure the bottom edges are lined up at your knees.

    • 10

Put on the belt and tighten it and then stand up.

    • 11

Pull the left side that is still loose. Grab the material 1 foot from the corner and pull it over the left shoulder.

    • 12

Grab the right loose corner and pull it around the back. Tie the two sides together with a cord.

    • 13

Slide a broach over the tied-down area to secure it further.
