How to Film with a Teleprompter

How to Film with a Teleprompter thumbnail
Teleprompters are commonly used by politicians, newscasters and TV hosts.

Filming using a teleprompter can be done inexpensively and using simple production materials. A teleprompter allows the subject being filmed to read their lines while still facing the camera. The teleprompter has replaced cue cards. The subject, if somewhat familiar with using a teleprompter, will not appear to be reading their lines, and the delivery should be smooth and fluid. The camera is usually stationary as the teleprompter is affixed to the camera and easier to read if not in motion.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the teleprompter. Most teleprompters come with all the necessary components, but building one from scratch is not extremely difficult. Attach the shroud to the camera. The shroud covers the teleprompter parts. Affix the beam splitter to the shroud at a 45 degree angle (or as indicated by the manufacturer). Connect the monitor to the shroud, and plug into the teleprompter software.

Set up the stage. Light the subject so the light does not interfere with the subject's view of the prompter. For example, placing a high-powered light next to the teleprompter will decrease the visibility of the teleprompter. Rehearse the pacing of the teleprompter with the subject. Make sure the distance between the subject and teleprompter is ideal for both the shot and subject.

    • 3

Turn on the teleprompter and film the subject. Do not adjust the location of the camera. The camera can be focused or zoomed -- this will not interfere with the function of the teleprompter.
