DIY: Long Stem Bouquets

DIY: Long Stem Bouquets thumbnail
Roses are the most popular flower for wedding bouquets.

Long-stem bouquets are elegant and classy. When the raw stems of the bouquet are exposed the bouquet looks more natural than the traditional fully wrapped or handled bouquet. These bouquets are easy to make and can be made of fresh or faux flowers. Choose flowers with long stems like long-stem roses, calla lilies, French tulips, flowering branches, and cosmos to create your bouquet.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure how long you want the stems to be. Hold one flower in your hands as if it was your bouquet. Look in the mirror. Have a friend mark on the flower's stem the desired length.

    • 2

Cut the stems to 1 inch longer than the desired length to provide for adjustment when the bouquet is formed. Take one stem at a time and run it under warm water. Make an angled cut with a sharp pair of scissors for bouquets that will not be used within two days. Cut the stems straight across for bouquets that will be used the same or next day. Set the cut stems in a vase of lukewarm water until they are to be used.

    • 3

Structure the bouquet. Gather the flowers together in your hand. Adjust the flowers until the bouquet is aesthetically pleasing to you. Tie the stems together by wrapping them about an inch or so below the flower base with a rubber band. Cut the stems with sharp scissors so they are all even with one another.

    • 4

Wrap the bouquet's handle. Start 1/3 to ½ up from the bottom of the stems depending on how much stem you want to show. Wrap ribbon around the stems. Crisscross the ribbon's ends in the front and tie a knot. Wrap the ribbon around the stems above the first wrap. Crisscross the ribbon's ends and tie a knot. Continue working upward to wrap the stems in this way until you cover over the rubber band. Create the last knot and pull the ribbon ends to the back of the bouquet. Tuck the ribbon ends underneath the wrapped ribbon to conceal them from view. Cut excess ribbon as needed.

Embellish the handle with pearl-head straight pins. Press the pins into and between the ribbon knots at an angle so they pierce deep into the handle. Line the pearls up so they are in a straight line.
