How to Convert Milliseconds Into Seconds

How to Convert Milliseconds Into Seconds thumbnail
Most stopwatches can't record a millisecond.

The metric system was designed during the French Revolution. Many cultures were fighting to expand their borders, or expanding their economic empires through trade. The integration of multiple forms of weights and measures became convoluted. A single, uniform standard was needed across all nations, and so the metric system was born. The milli- prefix is now considered common, and is often used with metric and English systems of measurement.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the known and unknown values of the equation. Write down 3,600 milliseconds as an example. The unknown value is the number of seconds.

    • 2

Write down the conversion factor you will use. A millisecond is 1/1,000 of a second.

    • 3

Write the two known values as a fraction, 3,600/1,000.

    • 4

Divide 3,600 by 1,000 to get the result 3.6. The value in seconds is 3.6.

Tips & Warnings

  • Knowing that milli- is 1/1000, you can also change the position of the decimal. Take the number 3,600 and move the decimal to the left three places -- one place for each zero in 1,000. You will get the value 3.6.
