How to Tie Vertical Hooks
Vertical hooks are typically small in size and suitable for fly tying use. The vertical hook features a unique bend in the shank that positions the eye in line with the hook point. The small sizes of these specialized hooks necessitate the use of a knot suited to small hooks, which also provides a secure method of attaching a fishing line to the hook.

1
Hold a vertical hook by the shank so the eye is easily accessible. Feed the free end of the fishing line through the eye of the hook with 5 to 6 inches of line extending beyond the eye.
-
2
Pull the free end of the line up beside the main line. Twist the free end around the main line six times to form a small loop above the hook eye.

3
Hold the wraps in place and turn the free end of the line down, forming a large loop along side the main wrapped line. Feed the free end through the small loop above the hook eye.
-
4
Pull the line through the small loop above the eye, then turn the free end and feed it through the large loop to the side of the wrapped line.
-
5
Moisten the knot with water or saliva. Pull the knot down tightly against the eye of the hook. Trim excess line from the knot with scissors.
