How to Use the Mic in Total Recorder
Digital technology has reduced the cost and complexity of home audio recording. Programs like Total Recorder easily and inexpensively can produce high-quality recordings, but you have know how to properly use the programs. For example, Total Recorder can record from a variety of audio sources, including a microphone. The microphone feature on Total Recorder allows the user to record audio from any microphone or mic-in audio source. By following the correct steps, you can use the microphone in Total Recorder to capture audio.

Insert the 1/8-inch plug of a microphone into the microphone input of your computer's sound card. Sound card microphone inputs feature microphone icons of the word "Mic" stamped near them.

Open the Total Recorder audio software on your computer. Click on "Parameters" in the main toolbar.

Click on the tab marked "Audio." Click on the "Sound board" option.

Click on your sound card from the list of audio devices on the right side of the menu. Click on "Use This Line."

Click on the line to which the microphone is connected. Total Recorder often assigns the name "Microphone" to your sound card's mic input.

Click on the "Change" button, and select the desired sound quality and format, such as DSP True Speech, MP3, a lossless format or PCM. High-quality recordings require large files. Click "OK."

Click "Record" at any point to record audio from the microphone.
