How to Dismantle the Campagnolo Cassette Hubs

Campagnolo components are made for road bicycles.

Campagnolo is an Italian bicycle component maker. Among "Campie's" components are the cassettes, the gear cluster found in the rear wheel of the bicycle. These gear clusters have a series of stacked, toothed metal rings that are held together via the hub. In dismantling the hub and cassette, what is being done is taking the individual gear rings off the solid hub. To dismantle the Campagnolo cassette, you first need to remove the cassette from the bicycle.

Things You'll Need

• Chain whip tool
• Cone wrench
• Bike stand

Instructions

1. Place the bicycle in the work stand. Shift the gearing so the chain is on the smallest gear on the cassette and the largest chain ring. Pull the chain off the cassette and let it rest next to the bicycle.

2. Wrap the chain whip tool around the cassette. The chain whip tool is a large handle with a chunk of bicycle chain. Wrap the chain portion around the cassette. Place the cone wrench on the opposite side of the wheel on the hub nut and use opposing force to turn the cassette off the wheel.

3. Pull the cassette off the bicycle. Set it on a flat surface with the largest gear down flat. Pull each individual gear ring off the hub. These simply pull up and off. Set them down on the bench as you remove each progressive gear.

4. Wipe down the hub, the large round cylinder, after all gear rings are removed.
