Apple's iTunes software is the iPod's preferred software to use when transferring music to and from an iPod device. But iTunes lacks any sort of feature that enables you to copy music directly from one iPod device onto another iPod. The fastest way to do this is to use a freeware program called iPod 2 iPod. Another way to transfer songs is to use a program called iPod Access to back up songs from the first iPod to the hard drive, and a third way involves altering the Windows Explorer settings to access the hidden music files on the iPod device.

Instructions

  1. iPod 2 iPod

    • 1

Download and install iPod 2 iPod. This freeware software will actually transfer songs directly from one iPod to another.

    • 2

Connect the first iPod device to the computer's USB or FireWire port. Run the iPod 2 iPod software and wait for the iPod's contents to load and display in the program window.

    • 3

Plug the second iPod device into another USB or FireWire port on the computer. Wait for the second iPod's contents to display in the second program window.

    • 4

Drag and drop songs from one program window to the other to exchange songs from one iPod to the other.

    iPod Access

    • 5

Download and install iPod Access for Windows PC or iPod Access for Mac OS. This shareware program is designed to simplify the process of backing up music from an iPod device to the computer hard drive.

    • 6

Plug the first iPod into the computer's USB port and run the iPod Access software. Click the "Backup" button to copy the iPod's music library to the computer.

    • 7

Drag the music files from the hard drive, and drop them into iTunes to add them to the iTunes library. Remove the first iPod, plug in the second iPod and use iTunes to transfer the music onto the second iPod device.

    Manual Copy

    • 8

Plug the first iPod into an empty USB or FireWire port on the computer. Wait for the computer to recognize the device, then open "My Computer" and double click on the "Devices With Removable Storage" icon.

    • 9

Open the iPod device, click "Tools" and select "Folder Options." Select the "View" tab and choose to "Show hidden files and folders," then click the "OK" button. Open the folder named "iPod_Control" and then open the folder named "Music."

    • 10

Select all the folders inside the "Music" folder and copy them to a directory on the hard drive. Open the "Music" directory on the hard drive and drag all the music files inside every folder named "F#" into the iTunes library.

    • 11

Eject the first iPod and plug the second iPod into an empty USB or FireWire port. Use iTunes to copy the music to the second iPod.
