How to Delete Your History Bar on Firefox

The Mozilla Firefox Web browser includes a feature that displays recently-visited websites when typing a URL into the browser's address bar. This feature was designed to help save users from having to type full URLs into the address bar each time they want to visit a website. This can cause privacy problems and also be very distracting for some users. The entries stored in the history bar can be deleted manually, and the history bar can also be disabled from showing any results at all.

Instructions

  1. Removing Entries

    • 1

Open Firefox and press "Ctrl" + "L" on the keyboard. To remove a specific entry in particular, begin typing the URL into the address bar and any matching entries stored in the history bar will appear in the drop-down box underneath the address bar.

    • 2

Press the "Down" arrow key on the keyboard to scroll through the list of entries in the history bar. Press the "Delete" key on the keyboard to delete the selected entry from the history bar.

    • 3

Press "Ctrl" + "L" to navigate back to the address bar; then press the "Backspace" key to delete the current URL from the address bar. Press the down arrow key on the keyboard to view a complete list of all the items currently stored in the history bar. Scroll through the list and press the "Delete" key on each entry to remove it from the history bar. Continue through the list until each entry has been removed.

    Disabling the History Bar

    • 4

Use the "about:config" page to disable the history bar from appearing at all. Type "about:config" into the address bar and click the "I'll Be Careful, I Promise" button to continue.

    • 5

Use the "Filter" box to search for the "browser.urlbar.maxRichResults" value. Double-click on the "browser.urlbar.maxRichResults" value when it appears in the "Preference Name" list to edit its value.

    • 6

Change the value to "-1" to disable the history bar completely.

    • 7

Cose the Firefox browser or enter another URL into the address bar to exit the "about:config" page
