How to Jump Into a Double Dutch Rope thumbnail
Double Dutch skipping involves jumping over two ropes moving in opposite directions.

Skipping Double Dutch is a type of rope jumping, typically played by children, where two ropes are used. Two people holding the ropes turn them in opposite directions while a third person jumps in the middle over the swinging ropes, attempting to not make contact with them. Jumping into the two turning ropes takes some practice, but by using correct timing and technique, making the jump can be effortless and smooth.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand directly next to one of the people turning the rope. Beginners should enter with the ropes on their left side as opposed to the right, as it is easier to find the correct rhythm when the ropes are turning against instead of with you.

    • 2

Find the rhythm of the ropes by counting each time a rope hits the ground. Each time a rope hits the ground, count to "3," starting over when you reach "3." This way you will understand how fast you will have to jump in order to clear each rope.

    • 3

Wait for the count to reach "3" and prepare to enter the ropes. On "3" as the rope lifts up, take one step toward the middle and jump in. Keep the number rhythm in your head as you jump in, continuing to jump each time you count a number.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use two different colored ropes in order to lessen the confusion for a beginner jumper. You may also tape an area on the floor to indicate the middle of the ropes, allowing a beginner jumper to see where they should jump into the ropes.
