Instructions

    • 1

Pour a small amount of methanol into a container. Methanol can be easily obtained in the auto department of Walmart. Look for a brand of antifreeze called "Heet," which is composed entirely of methanol.

    • 2

Sprinkle a small amount of boric acid into the methanol using a spoon and stir to help it dissolve. Don't worry if some of the powder settles at the bottom. You can find boric acid in several household roach killers, but a popular brand by the name of "Enoz Roach Away" is 99 percent of the proper chemical.

    • 3

Take your container outside to a well ventilated area, and set it on a heat-safe surface. Carefully light the fluid using a lighter or a match. You will see a bright green flame.

    • 4

Adding paper to your flame will make the flame rise and can keep it going longer than just the fuel alone.

Tips & Warnings

  • How long your flame will burn depends on how much methanol you use when making the fuel. The more methanol you use, the longer the flame lasts.

  • Always do this outside. There be a lot of smoke produced, which will set off your fire alarms indoors. Always avoid breathing smoke and fumes. Do not allow children to perform this experiment.
