How to Clean Smoke Stains off Plastic

If you are able to salvage some items from a fire, they likely will be covered in black and brown smoke stains. Plastic items in your home may also get covered in cigarette smoke stains. Some gentle smoke stains will be easy to clean, while others will take more effort to remove. Clean the smoke damage as soon as possible. If you let the smoke stains set in, they will be more difficult to remove.

Things You'll Need

• White vinegar
• Spray bottle
• Container
• Borax
• Ammonia
• Liquid dish soap
• Scrubbing brush

Instructions

1. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar.

2. Spray the plastic with white vinegar until it is completely coated.

3. Let the white vinegar sit for several minutes to loosen the smoke stains and smells.

4. Scrub the plastic with a soft-bristled brush until the stains are gone or until you've removed as of the stain as possible.

5. Mix 1/2 gallon of water with ¼ cup of Borax, ½ tbsp. of ammonia and ¼ tsp. of liquid dish soap in a container.

6. Put on gloves to protect your hands from drying.

7. Dip a brush into the solution and scrub it over the plastic until you remove the rest of the smoke stains.

8. Rinse the plastic with clear water and let it dry completely.
